BABEL 'a confusion of voices'
Getting to grips with post 16 career options has never been easy. With so much to find out, so many people to listen to, factors to consider, rules and procedures to follow, it's no wonder students get confused and turned off.
This fun board game gets students talking about the pros and cons of future choices, the steps they need to take to ensure success and the strategies they could use to deal with any problems that might arise, without making it feel like hard work.
The game, based on the award winning 'Road to Success' game developed by Birmingham and Solihull Connexions, contains:
- 48 post 16 focussed questions cards – to test their understanding of and knowledge about the options that are open to them.
- 48 pre-16 Best and Worst cards – to explore the consequences to their longer term career plans of things like truancy, vandalism, getting all their GCSE coursework finished, etc.
The games also comes with a HE version which contains:
- 48 HE focussed question cards – to test their knowledge and understanding of the HE options – how to apply, what the jargon means and what they would need to do to join the graduate labour market on graduating.
- 48 HE Best and Worst cards – to explore the best and worst ways to cope with the UCAS application procedure, the choosing of courses and problems they may encounter at university.
Answers and tips and suggestions are included. Ideal for small groupwork (3-10 players) or as part of the careers curriculum or on careers activity days, the game works well with pre 16 students, one year sixth and intermediate students as well as advanced level students interested in the HE option.

"I played BABEL this morning with a bunch of hardcore 'anger management' type kids from Years 9 and 10 and it went down a treat. Plenty of fun with some decent questions related to post-16 options. I did it with two groups of three, both supported by a teacher and a TA, but this was because of the nature of the group. With a less disruptive bunch it could probably be run with out teacher support. In all, I think it's one of the best resources I've used."
